I think today will be the first “repeat game series,” since I already used Brawl. It’s worth it though.
- Day 17: Music I’m Never Tired of
- Game: Super Smash Bros Melee
- Track: Final Destination
It’s worth it cause Melee’s FD theme is so much better. I respect their decision to lean into the Brawl leitmotif when writing Brawl’s FD theme, but it’s too much repetitive to me.
Melee FD on the other hand is such a dynamic piece. The song has an overarching theme, but it keeps iterating on it before flowing into the next section. Each section alternates between “loud” and “soft” with varying instrumental signature. As a former high school clarinetist, I love the woodwind section that follows up the extremely (ahem) epic intro. But I wouldn’t call any section my “favorite” because they’re literally all good.
In terms of Melee itself, I don’t think my personal Melee story is that interesting, though it is probably a common one. I played it with friends as a kid, and I occasionally watch tournaments online. Every once in a while I pick it back up and practice my L-cancels and waveshines, but I’ve never had the courage to enter the online matchmaking scene.
I’m okay with that. I don’t aspire to be good, I just want to be a viewer with some degree of appreciation for what the pros are doing. I’m a melee fan, not a melee player.
