Do visual novels count as games?  Probably not, but it’s my list, so I make the rules!

  • Day 12: Sad Music
  • Game: Subarashiki Hibi
  • Track: Yoru no Himawari

Let me get this out of the way – I wish I were a visual novel reader, but I’m not.  I’ve tried, but it’s just not for me.  I’ve just never been much of a reader in general.

But I am a visual novel soundtrack enjoyer.  I initially learned of VN music while watching gacha game streams on Twitch.  The first time I heard Yoru no Himawari I instantly fell in love.  I’m usually a lurker in Twitch but I actually joined the streamer’s Discord later and ended up asking him for the song name.

As I’ve said before, I’m a sucker for piano songs.  I’m extra a sucker for the way this song opens with an eerie harmony before resolving into normal major key.  Odd harmonies continue to appear here and there as the song goes on, but never for too long.  It feels like the song is “reaching” for something, or somewhere.  And I dunno about you but I’m feeling things right now just listening along.

When I hear this song, I think it’s “beautiful, but sad.”  Then I start thinking thoughts like “life is beautiful, but sad.”  It doesn’t send me spiraling into the abyss or anything, but it definitely puts me in a certain mood.
