This image was trending in 2020 but I apparently missed it. Granted, Discord is my main social network, so it’s not unusual for me to miss Twitter trends. But when I saw this last month, I had to do it.
Video game music hugely impacted my music taste. 14 years ago I didn’t know who Weezer was, but I knew the Super Smash Bros Brawl OST inside and out. I was so into VGM that I jailbroke my iPod to play raw chiptune smc files. I still remember listening to it on the bus ride home.
I listen to less VGM these days, but the music I do listen to is often slanted toward a quality I can only describe as “chiptuney.” Two metal bands that come to mind are Protest the Hero and Gorod. Something about the energy, the tightness, countermelodies… idk, it warrants its own post.
But enough exposition. Let’s get started.
- Day 1: Title Screen Music
- Game: Nintendo World Cup (NES)
- Track: Title Theme
You wouldn’t suspect such a generic title to follow up with such a banger, right? Honestly this games entire soundtrack is great, and pretty much maxes out my “chiptuney” measurement. If you listened to either of the linked metal bands, you’ll understand.
Now, some of you may piece together that this game came out two years before I was born. My siblings are about a decade older than me, so we were never that close (a sentiment I’ve dubbed “only child, but with older siblings”). I basically inherited my brother’s NES and SNES collection when he moved out. It pretty much defined my childhood, and is largely responsible for the introverted nerd that is me.
Sadly my brother died from cancer in 2017. Frankly it’s weird for me, since our relationship was so… non-brotherly? But I do feel awful for everyone who was close to him. Cancer’s a bitch.
Well, geez, didn’t expect to end up in that head space on day 1! I’m gonna go on a limb and guess it won’t usually be quite this gloomy. But no promises. I haven’t planned too much, but I do know I want to hide nothing in this space. In the past I would’ve backspaced this entire post, and then never finished the next iteration. No more! It’s time to get vulnerable.
